Clear coat is incredible technology. It was originally designed to stop single stage color paint from oxidizing. And by far and large, it does a great job. As an organic material it has its limitations with being susceptible to other organic threats like salt, bugs, sap, and mineral deposits but it is a great barrier between the environment and the color paint.
As years have gone on, more regulations like VOC limitations have caused manufacturers to apply less and less clear coat to automobiles. A thinner layer means more susceptibility to scratching through and it means less paint to compound and polish to remove defects and swirls. Those bugs that have eaten into the front end? That’s some deep damage. That rock damage you just heard? It probably went through to the color.
The truth is, we need more protection, more hardness, more layers. Ceramic coatings do an incredible job of protecting your paint against the sun and the environment and they have some added scratch resistance, but if you’re needing extra protection against scratches we’re going to need to step it up a notch.
This is where for years we have turned to PPF (clear bra) - a film that many have put at least on their front ends and often over the whole vehicles to protect against rock chips and heavier scuffs and scrapes. This has been a great option to step up the level of protection, but it has come at a cost.
No film lasts forever. Eventually there’s cracking, peeling, and yellowing. If there’s damage done to the film it needs replacing which can run up quite a bill between removal and reapplication - not to mention the risk of peeling off your paint in the process which is a common occurrence on repainted surfaces (some of which you might not know you have).
So, what are the drawbacks? PPF is expensive, will need replacing over time, and may damage your paint in the process. What’s something for vehicle owners without those drawbacks and with the added benefit of ceramic coatings?
